Sinn Fein's Westminster Election candidate Gerry Adams MP signs Anti Racism Charter

On Tuesday 27 April 2010 at 1.00pm in the Sinn Fein Offices , Falls Road, Gerry Adams Sinn Fein’s candidate for the Westminster elections, will sign an Anti Racism Charter for West Belfast.

This unique initiative has been developed by the West Against Racism Network (WARN) in an effort to actively promote an anti racist culture across West Belfast.  Racism in Belfast and elsewhere has been steadily on the rise in recent years; the appalling attacks on members of the Roma community in the summer of 2009 was but one example of this.

The Anti Racism Charter consists of a single page document which includes an explanation of what racism is, adapted from the UN Declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice, along with some examples blaming migrants for job losses due to the ‘credit crunch’ or shouting sectarian or other racist abuse during a Celtic-Rangers match that its not going your way.  The Charter pledges the signatory not to engage in racist words or actions and to challenge it wherever and whenever it occurs.

The West Against Racism Network (WARN) has invited all Westminster election candidates to sign this Charter.
